If you want some sound evaluations of draft prospects, check out my list. What makes me so confident? Cuz I’m a football fan and I’ve got an opinion and I’ve got a blog. The so called “experts” can stuff it. If you think you know any better you are wrong.
I picked up a list of some fool’s 50 top draft prospects on the internet just so I would have something to work off of. This list leaves out some really good players. Where’s Steve Smith WR, USC and Jason Hill WR, Washington St.??? This list has probably also left off some other excellent players that aren’t jumping to mind right away. I could take the time to research more than one draft website and make sure my list covers everyone who is worthy, but I’ve got a real job and I ain’t got time to play Mel Kiper Jr. all day. Regardless, the list has enough of the players that are consensus top picks that it should be informative for most of you slugs.
So here’s my take on these bums:
Calvin Johnson WR, Georgia Tech - I know I watched him in a game last year but I can’t remember what my first impression was. I should make notes. Anyway, I put a lot of faith in my gut reaction so I wish I remember what that was. Then I could either agree or disagree with the all of the accolades he’s getting.
Joe Thomas, T, Wisconsin - Even the guys who are touting him highly can find some flaws in his play on film and this concerns me. Add to this, he doesn’t really pass my “eye” test. (eye test simply means when he walks into the room does he look like a player) But in his defense he made a lot of plays on film and showed good footwork at the scouting combine. Given that, he probably won’t be a total bust, but I just don’t know if he’s worth a top five pick.
Adrian Peterson, RB, Oklahoma - Love him. Potential game breaker.
JaMarcus Russell, QB, LSU - A beast with a cannon. Will do no worse than Daunte Culpepper. Question is, will he do better?
Patrick Willis, LB, Ole Miss - Mike Singeltary, who’d had a stellar career as an Army drill sargent, was working the linebackers pretty hard at Senior Bowl practice. Willis legs looked kind of skinny to me. Anyway, I don’t think there is a LB in this draft class who’s a future hall of famer. This guy might be the best but that’s based on other people’s opinions.
Brady Quinn, QB, Notre Dame - I’ve gone back and forth on this guy. I want him to do well because there are not enough good QBs in the league. I was watching something on him the other day regarding a lack of accuracy and it made me think of Rex Grossman. That’s not good.
Gaines Adams, DE, Clemson - Saw part of game that he was playing last year where he took either a blocked kick or pass to the house. I think he’s got the best potential to be an “impact” player on the defensive side of the ball.
Alan Branch, DT, Michigan - I watched a few games with Michigan this year and this guy made no impression on me. Scouts say he takes some plays off too. This would discourage me from making him a top 10 pick.
Amobi Okoye, DT, Louisville - This guy is only 19 years old - he was playing Division I college ball at age 16. To me, that’s an intangible that is a good sign. And he impressed scouts at Senior Bowl practiced. I’d definitely take him ahead of Branch.
Jamaal Anderson, DE, Arkansas - I’ve seen no game film and don’t remember him being at Combine or Senior Bowl.
LaRon Landry, S, LSU - This guy is a physical speciman. He reminds me of the Vikings old safety, Joey Browner. Didn’t always make the right plays or reads in college but I’d take a chance on him based on his physical abilities.
Marshawn Lynch, RB, Cal - Watching game film of him recently has removed some doubts I had about him. He doesn’t have the speed to be a game breaker but should be a reliable, productive workhorse.
Darelle Revis, CB Pitt - This guys is very high on some draft boards, not so high on others. I don’t have enough info. to make a comment.
Leon Hall, CB Michigan - This guy is high on most draft boards and I don’t understand why. I just don’t think he’s got the ability to stick to wide receivers. He’s got good character and is a hard worker but I think he really struggles with change of direction which is kind of important for a CB.
Reggie Nelson, S, Florida - I want a safety who can bring the wood when he tackles. I don’t see that in this guy and on that basis I believe he’s overvalued.
Robert Meachem, WR, Tennesse - I like all Tennessee wide receivers. They should have their own show on the Speed Channel.
Levi Brown, T, Penn St. - As opposed to Joe Thomas, this guy does pass my “eye” test. I can envision him beeing a bookend dominating tackle. He’s got the size and disposition.
Eric Wright, CB, UNLV - Has some off field issues which got him kicked out of USC and why he ended up at UNLV. Has a lot of physical talent. Given all that, he should end up with the Raiders.
Dwayne Jarrett, WR, USC - Has shown the ability to come up with big plays in big games. Lack of speed has never stopped WRs from being productive at next level so I believe he will be a good starter in NFL before his career is over. Pro Bowler? Maybe not.
Adam Carriker, DE, Nebraska - He just looks strong enough to be a welcome addition to any defensive unit.
Chris Houston, CB, Arkansas - He’s already got the cockiness of a cornerback. Very good in press coverage. Fast. Benched 27 reps at the combine which beat out some lineman. A very enticing package indeed.
Brandon Merriweather, S, Miami - He looked pretty good at Senior Bowl practice to me. I think I’d take him over Reggie Nelson.
Dwayne Bowe, WR, LSU - He’s got the body to tough to bring down in the secondary. Inconsistent hands are the only thing holding him back.
Paul Posluzny, LB, Penn St. - Some scouts like him a lot. Some don’t like him at all. Could be a good investment down the road. He’s someone I’d take if I’m not drafting him too highly.
Arron Sears, OL, Texas - Has got a good body but needs to get better with some fundamentals. Translation: don’t pick him too high.
Joe Staley, OL, Central Michigan - A lot of scouts like him. He looked stiff to me.
Ted Ginn, WR, Ohio St. - I see very good potential as a receiver. He’s got the kind of speed that just makes him hard to cover. And he’ll be an excellent return man which gives him extra value.
Michael Griffin S, Texas - The more film I see, the more I think this is the 2nd best safety prospect. I put him ahead of Merriweather and Nelson. His brother Cedric was a rookie CB with the Vikings last year and did well, starting a few games towards the end of the season. However, his brother was the first to break the NFL’s new code of conduct last week.
Jon Beason, LB, Miami - Can look spectacular on some highlight reels but since no one is gushing over him and he is a Miami linebacker, I suspect there are deficiencies. I think he might not be as physical as teams would prefer.
Aaron Ross, CB, Texas - Texas is producing some excellent DB prospects. Huff and Griffin from last year and now Griffin and Ross this year. I like them all.
Victor Abiamiri, DE, Notre Dame - I don’t having any info. on this ballplayer. Couldn’t have been that great, Notre Dame’s defense was horrible.
Zach Miller, TE, Arizona St. - Overrated in my opinion. Production never equalled the hype.
Jarvis Moss, DE, Florida - Many varying opinions on this guy. I haven’t seen enough to comment one way or the other.
Greg Olsen, TE, Miami - Probably best tight end in a weak class of tight ends. He should be good. But who’s idiot enough to take a TE high in the first round?
Justin Blalock, OL, Texas - Played tackle at college. Projected to be a guard. Benched the most reps at the combine. Here’s one of the group of good depth on the O line in this draft. Good value as a second round pick.
Tony Ugoh, T, Arkansas - Not as highly touted as Thomas and Levi Brown but I liked him at Senior Bowl practice and the combine. I think he’s got a good shot to be a good tackle at the next level.
Sidney Rice, WR, South Carolina - So tall. Too young and green around the edges. He should not have come out so early. Could be great, but also could be a bust.
Anthony Spencer, DE, Purdue - Has potential as an edge pass rusher but not much else.
Eric Weddle, S, Utah - I’m afraid he may be a little slow for the NFL game. It seems like someone’s always trying to raise the stock of some slow white guy. They usually don’t make it. (John Lynch excepted)
LaMarr Woodley, DE, Michigan - One of the few names on this list of 50 where I’m saying “Who?”
Brian Leonard, RB, Rutgers - Wants to play running back. When he gets a bite of reality he’ll play a versatile fullback.
Ryan Kalil, C, USC - Future Pro Bowler.
Lawrence Timmons, LB, Florida St. - Another speedy linebacker who’s drawback is a lack of physical presence.
DeMarcus Tyler, DL, NC State - At first I was like “who?” Then I realized this must be “Tank” Tyler. He got schooled at Senior Bowl practices in one on one drills with Ryan Kalil. He looks soft to me.
Ben Grubb, G, Auburn - Another good solid O line prospect.
Marcus McCauley, CB, Fresno St. - After his junior season he was a sure #1 pick and then he played terribly last year and has fallen. As a result, he won’t get taken in 1st round but would be a good late 2nd round value.
David Harris, LB, Michigan - Not that highly touted. There just aren’t that many good linebackers out there this year.
Justin Harrell, DL, Tennessee - Played with an injury last year until coaches forced him out of the lineup. Has got talent and a good attitude so is a good pick to add depth to the defensive line.
Brandon Siler, LB, Florida - Who?
Quinn Pitcock, DL, Ohio St. - I’m surprised he’s on this list. He never struck me as a pro when I was watching him play.
Print this list out and refer back to it about 10 games into the next season and I bet you’ll be paying me for my opinion next year.
